Mabon

The next Sabbat on the Wheel of the Year is Mabon

Mabon is one of the four Lesser Sabbats or Quarter ceremonies. The Lesser Sabbats contain the Solstices and Equinoxes representing the astronomical beginnings of the seasons. With these Sabbats the dates may vary by a day or two each year. This would be due to the fact that they depend upon the sun’s entry into the zodiacal signs.

Mabon is seen as the second harvest holiday, continuing what was began during Lughnasadh. The days and nights become equal during this time. This in the second time of the year that day and night are equal, the first time being at Ostara. However, unlike Ostara it was the days that grew longer than the nights. After Mabon the darkness is the one that is beginning to gain over the daylight.

It is during Mabon that the “Lord of Harvest” or “King of the Hunt” dies as a willing sacrifice. Upon descending to the underworld there he awaits his rebirth by the Goddess. At this time nature declines and draws back it’s bounty in readiness for the winter and it’s time of rest.

Mabon is celebrated on September 20 -21

Some other names this Sabbat is known by: Aequinoctium Auctumnale, Alban Elfed, Autumn Equinox, Equinozio di Autunno, Feast of Avalon, Mean Formhair, Night of the Hunter, Wine Harvest,

Holidays/Traditions occurring during Mabon in the NH (Northern Hemisphere): Ampelia, Boedromion, Feast of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, Harvest Home, Michaelmas, Vinalia

Meditation Techniques

While meditation might sound like something that everyone can do in just a few simple minutes, the honest truth is that there is more to it than just sitting in a quiet space with your hands on your knees and saying “Om”.

When you start to learn to meditate you may wish to look for an experienced teacher or group to help you understand all of the steps to mediating.

Sitting there and closing your eyes and just hoping it will work will lead to no where and feeling frustrated with the practice all together. Once you have an understanding of the steps taken with each form of meditation and know which is right for you and your personality then you will see the results so many rave about.

Here is a technique for you to try on your own.
